Another year begins
As 2010 begins, a new decade at that, I wonder what people do to celebrate the beginning of the year. Growing up with my southern family, we ate black eyed peas, collard greens, and maybe threw in some cheese grits. We didn’t do much in the way of resolutions. For a while, I tried resolutions. In college, I resolved to study more. After college, for a few years I resolved to do things like keep the house clean.
Now, I avoid resolutions like the plague because that just seems to doom me to not meet the resolutions. I’ve come full circle, and I’m back to eating black eyed peas.
…and archiving my rather large email inbox.
What do you do on New Years Day?

We always have a Christmas ham, then on New Year’s Day we take the bone and left over trimmings to fix cabbage soup with cornbread.
Just a tradition that exemplifies carrying the old into the new and a custom in my family that emphasized frugality in the New Year.
Have a great 2010!

Ditto on the “I avoid resolutions like the plague”, Ella. I have started any new traditions, maybe I should think about that for next year. I don’t really have any plans for today other then to just enjoy.

Gem, I love that tradition! We don’t do that exactly, but my mother-in-law makes turkey soup from the leftover turkey. Good stuff!
Michelle,
New Years just feels so momentous to me every year. I want to carry on what traditions I can, even if I make them up. And maybe I should. Sounds like a chance to give my kids something unique.

This year I aspire to not be a nervous wreck at my kid’s competitions.
For the last few years my girls have had opposite meet/competition schedules. One went during fall, the other during spring. An even balance and one that allowed me time to recover between events.
Since my oldest moved up to the optional level in gymnastics, now she is competing in the spring, which means both kids have 1-2 weekends a month of competing. I already need a Valium just thinking about it. My youngest does dance which spans an entire 3 day weekend each time, so we are talking a minimum of 3 competitions a month.
(Save me!)
I don’t know why I get so nervous. I’m usually laid back and easy-going. But, this resolution is going to be a difficult one since I’m already getting butterflies simply at the thought of the first gymnastics meet next week. GAH.
I never set New Year’s resolutions, but this one is something I truly want to master. The Valium should help me a smidge, I hope.
Great topic Ella!

When I was young and newly married I would sit up on NYE (obviously I didn’t have a life back then either! LOL) creating a list (literally pages of a legal pad long!) of the things I wanted to do throughout the year. Those lists usually ended up lost in a stack of papers about a month later.
Eventually I just stopped making the lists. (Thank GOD, what a waste of time and paper!) This year I made a very short, attainable list to check off throughout the year.

I don’t have any NY’s traditions. Resolutions seem made to be broken. No food traditions. Just take it one day at a time…maybe that’s a good resolution.
