Waking from a pleasant doze to the feel of Her Majesty nibbling at the base of his throat, Alitus kept his eyes closed. He rocked his head back into the pillows. "Mmm, Rheyn."

They'd made love for hours. Hands above him, stretched out on the bed, he remained completely still, too exhausted to do more than let her use him. Rheyn Destoiya always drained his pheromones but a good long drink of water and a night's sleep would restore them.

Small chance of that tonight. He smiled in lazy enjoyment of the attention of his empress. Her mouth felt cool, her hands warm. She scratched her nails down his chest and skimmed her fingertips across his belly. His skin jumped at the tickly touch. It made him smile.

Ooh, yum! I love it when she takes her time. He spread his legs, opening himself to the warm slip of her fingers along his thigh.

"I'm glad you're home, love." She cupped a hand around his jaw and tilted his head toward her. "I'm going to devour you with kisses."

Alitus moaned against her lips. Destoiya clutched a handful of his hair and held him as she stroked her tongue deeper. The taste of aged whiskey lingered on her mouth. She'd called for her best liquor tonight. Worth it, she'd toasted, honoring him.

She continued her rough tease of his nipples and explored the length of his thighs. Wait a sec. He took quick stock of where she touched him. Hair, jaw, thighs, nipples... Whoa! Too many hands. Abruptly out of the moment, he flinched.

Destoiya's mouth was still connected with his but her eyes were open and watching him. Beyond the dark halo of her hair moved another woman. The candlelight shone on curly red hair. The empress moved back.

She'd bound him while he slept. Left hand, blue silk, right hand red. The bonds hadn't tightened until he'd moved. When he moved his feet, he felt the bonds at his ankles contract. He drew a quick breath, willing himself not to panic. Though every pleasure room in the palace sported bondage gear, she'd never tied him before. She must have her reasons.

Her Majesty would not hurt him. She would never hurt him.

"Alitus." She gestured to the woman who came into view beside her. "This is Erryq. She's going to share you with me tonight."

"Your Majesty." He never failed to honor her with her title around others. It seemed even more appropriate with him tied.

"You're no slave, love, but I want you to give yourself to Erryq as if you are. I want you to obey her as you would me. Don't fight anything she does." She leaned down and set her mouth against his ear and licked the outer edge of it. Her warm breath made him shiver. "Trust me," she whispered. "I'll explain all this later." Destoiya kissed his cheek and sat back. "Do you understand?"

He would trust her even if she never explained. The candlelight made it difficult to see detail, but her eyes had a haunted look. Pleading with him. What was this woman to Destoiya, that his submission meant so much?

"I'm yours always, Your Majesty." Alitus put all the awe and respect he felt for her in his voice. "Use me in whatever way you desire."

Alitus reached beneath the veil and adjusted the fit of it one more time while he waited to be introduced. A cap snugged over the top of his head, the veil itself attached to the top of that. The thick netting made the room dark. Gloves covered his hands. Not one inch of skin showed.

How am I ever going to find my way around at night wearing this thing? I can’t believe she’s handicapping me like this. You’d think she’d give me decent tools to work with instead of making me damned near blind and suffocating me.

He pressed his hands together under the veil as if praying and brought them to his lips. An array of emotions flip-flopped in his stomach: disgust, shame, disappointment, anger, and overriding them all--a gut-clenching sense of betrayal.

Alitus lifted his head. I don’t have to put up with this. I don’t have to stay here. I can quit. He sighed raggedly, lowered his head again. No. There’s no use in lying to myself. I’m as addicted to her as she is to me.

A Better became part of his lover. Separation ached. And who would hire a Better already addicted to someone else? Especially if that someone were the empress and the Better was the most visible one in the empire. He let out a long, sighing breath.

There’d only been one generation of Betters ever born. The public outcry against enhanced beings ended the movement before it gained enough momentum to ever be considered dangerous.

If my parents had known the true ramifications of their choice to conceive me as a Better instead of a normal, would they still have done it? If they’d had any idea how dangerous we could be? Mother always told me all she wanted was a child, so it had to be my father who--

“Is it heavy?”

Alitus started at the deep, masculine voice. He hadn’t seen anyone come close, but Her Majesty's android bodyguard, Prentice, stood right behind him. He did not bother to turn around. “What do you want?”

“She must spoil you if you get away with that attitude.”

“What do you know about attitude? You’re an android. They just program it out of you.”

“You have a lot to learn.” Prentice rarely intentionally made his presence known, though he was never far from Her Majesty. Easy to forget he was even there. “Her Majesty sent me to watch over you.”

“Ok, you’ve watched me. Now go back and tell her I don’t need a watchdog. I will do my duty.”

“I think I’ll let you tell her that yourself.”

Sighing, Alitus turned around, tilted back his head and set a hand on top of the veil to keep it from slipping. Prentice towered over everyone. “Is Her Majesty with you?”

“No. But she’ll be watching your speech.”

“Fine.” Alitus turned back around.

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“What question?”

“Is the veil heavy? You keep lowering your head.”

“No, not heavy.” Alitus adjusted the hang across his shoulders and pulled it away from his body in front. “It’s hot. I can hardly breathe.”

“Turn it on.”

“What?” Alitus pivoted on one foot. He held the veil against his face so he could see out of it better. “It’s hard to hear in this thing.”

“Reach up inside it and touch the inner brim above your right ear.”

Alitus stroked one finger along the brim. “I feel a series of small bumps.”

“Those are the controls. Press them from front to back to increase the cooling effect.”

Bracing himself for a breeze, Alitus pressed the first bump. Instead, the air immediately lightened and felt less humid. He took the first deep breath he’d been able to draw since donning the veil. “Oh, that feels good.” He pressed the next bump. “Much better. Thanks, Prentice.”

“The ones about a finger’s width above them adjust visibility. Did no one show you how to operate the veil?”

“No. Her Majesty thrust it into my hands and said, ‘This is yours.’ I thought this was all there was to it.” Alitus touched the upper bumps; the room’s brightness increased by half. He tapped the others in sequence. His view of the veil almost disappeared. “Is this thing still opaque?” He held up a hand in front of his face. “I can see every stitch in this glove. It’s like the veil’s not there.”

“You’ll be able to see out in any lighting, but no one will be able to see your face.”

“Great.” Alitus pressed fingers to brow. “I really will be invisible.”

Prentice hmm’d, then ducked his head toward him. “Just like an android.”

The palace press secretary motioned to Alitus that he was on. When he turned back to thank Prentice once more for his help, the tall android was nowhere in sight.

My characters have gotten themselves emails and are hanging out on my group, flirting and pestering everyone.

Alitus showed up saying he'd come to visit since I had written such a nice book about him. And of course, Wulf has been here before for character chats, so he came along to show him the ropes. (stop snickering! I meant that in a totally innocent way. Innocent, I tell you!)

Well, of course then Senth had to show up and tell them some news about Khyff that had everyone aflutter. And then tonight, Luc Saint-Cyr dropped in, asking if anyone had seen his 'miscreant son' Senthys.

Several of the women claimed he was tied up or "otherwise engaged" and couldn't be disturbed right now... rofl.

Can't wait to see what happens next.

Alitus has been rather quiet on the group. However, Saint-Cyr and his son Senth have been picking at each other. I'm about to bump them both for flaming if they're not careful. lol

Honestly, this is a blast. It's fun to get in character. I'm just afraid I'll post Senth's answers in Luc's window and then where will I be?
