Into the Flame is a contemporary story about Chicago firefighter Jack Lawrence and newspaper reporter Kendra Saxton. Jack and Kendra meet when he rescues her from a burning high rise where she’s working as a legal assistant. The destruction of the building, and death of her boss, leaves Kendra without a job. Weeks later she meets Jack again at an awards banquet for the search and rescue team of Ladder 62. After a slow dance, and plenty of sexual attraction, they begin seeing each other.

Passion burns between them hotter than the blazes that Jack fights. Unable to live on love (and sex) alone, Kendra makes a decision to change career paths after seeing a picture of Jack on the front page of the Chicago Daily Newspaper. She turns to the newspaper offering her services as a photographer/reporter. Receiving a less than enthusiastic reception to her offer, she promises to give the Daily that which it cannot seem to achieve, an exclusive interview with local hero, Jack Lawrence. Unknown to Kendra, Jack has a distrust of the press because they always seem to be in the way when he’s trying to save a life.

A serious misunderstanding about Kendra’s motives for becoming a reporter tears the two of them apart. While they are at odds, Kendra throws herself into her work and soon becomes the lead reporter for the newspaper, earning the hatred and jealousy of George “Buck” Roberts, the Daily’s former top reporter. In an attempt to force Kendra to give up her successful career, Buck goes after the one thing he knows will hurt Kendra the most to lose, fireman Jack Lawrence. When Kendra learns Jack has deliberately been trapped in a burning building because of a story that she covered, she nearly loses her own life trying to save him. That is the catalyst that brings the two of them back together, but Jack and Kendra are not out of danger yet. They must learn how to work together to survive.

A short unedited excerpt.

Jack knocked again. A little harder this time.

Kendra opened the door and felt her stomach flood with butterflies.

He was wearing jeans and a tight faded blue t-shirt that said Fire Department in letters so worn they were barely readable. His chest looked wide and inviting. His black hair was tousled and still slightly damp. He had that hesitant grin that Kendra found completely endearing.

“I heard you have a fire that needs put out, lady,” he said huskily, raising his thick eyebrows in question.

Kendra laughed. Reaching out to grasp the front of his t-shirt and pull him inside for a kiss. “Yeah,” she said a little breathlessly. “It took you long enough to get here.”

Jack’s smile was pure sin. He pulled her into his arms and Kendra felt his warmth down the whole length of her body. She wrapped her arms around his narrow waist, leaning her head against his chest. She breathed in the smell of his aftershave and the scent of his freshly showered skin. For just a moment she let herself enjoy simply being within the protective shelter of his muscular arms. And then she looked up at him and found she couldn’t breathe.

The look in Jack’s eyes was breathtaking. His eyes were half lowered, sultry and hot. He focused on her mouth. The shape of her lips seemed to fascinate him. He brought his hand up to cup her cheek and his thumb traced her full lower lip, pulling it down slightly so he could see a glimpse of her teeth.

Kendra’s heart danced with anticipation causing a delicious liquid heat to pool between her thighs as Jack lowered his head slowly till his lips touched hers. His touch was feather light at first; the barest brushing of skin to skin. Then his teeth scraped her lower lip, teasing her, tempting her, until she opened her mouth and Jack fastened his mouth firmly to hers, dipping his tongue inside.

Kendra moaned and Jack lifted her up from the floor, never taking his mouth from hers. He put his hands around her waist, carrying her to the sofa like she weighed no more than a child. He broke the kiss first, staring down at her, his green eyes intense, questioning, needing to know if he should continue.

Kendra answered his unspoken question without words of her own. She pulled his t-shirt out of his jeans, running her hands up under the soft fabric. Jack’s skin was hot to the touch, his body firm from work conditioning.

“You’re so hard,” Kendra whispered kneading the muscles of his athletic body.

“I got harder parts, honey,” Jack responded.

Isn't this cover incredible? April truly outdid herself. The background detail is amazing. My mother is an artist and she's showing EVERYONE the bookcover. LOL My brother even paid me a visit to get a peek at the cover...and my boss...well, he said we are going to frame it and put it on the wall. I've did so many Snoopy dances I'm exhausted now!

P.S. Did anyone see the two high-rise fires on the news yesterday-- one in Houston and one, oddly enough, in Chicago. Scary stuff. I may ask for a lower floor in Houston.

I did not do it for publicity, I SWEAR!

All joking aside, it's very sad...a month or so ago we had a fire in an apartment complex just across the street from where I work. Several people lost their lives. The whole town pitched in to give the survivors places to stay and to replace their household items.

I work on the sixth floor of a seven story building. It's on the register of historic buildings, so it's probably not the safest building in the city...but it is incredibly beautiful with its marbled floors and fountain in the lobby. It looks like you step back in time 100 years when you enter. (However, its been on fire twice in the ten years I've worked in the building) - not to mention the numerous false alarms.

Thanks Lisa! I hope you enjoy it. I just finished the final editing this week so hopefully I'll have a release date in a few days. I plan on doing another "fireman" story soon and it will be even hotter - with a tinge of humor added into the mix.

STAY COOL? NO WAY! I'm so excited I can barely contain myself.

I fell in love with these characters early on as I was writing them and I hope everyone else will too. Even my best friend's mom fell in love with Jack. She thought the story was scandalous (but she read it anyway).

I'll be back later with more detail on the making of Into the Flame! Jack and Kendra weren't the only one's having an adventure during this story.

As promised, I’ll tell you about my adventure as I was writing Into the Flame...hummm, which adventure should I tell you? You see, the problem is I have too many adventures...some of my friends call them mishaps...I prefer the term adventure. Anyway, a lot of things happened during the writing of Into the Flame.

I work in West Virginia and live in Ohio, several bridges span the river between where I live and work. If you haven’t ever been to the Ohio, it’s a fairly wide river, and depending on the bridge design, you can’t always see to the other side.

I was taking a photography class at the time, an evening class, it was all adults and mostly hobbyists wanting to improve their photography. The class was in West Virginia, but we wanted to get to the Ohio side to take a night picture of Huntington from across the river. The teacher wasn’t familiar with that area and didn’t know how to get us over to the dock.

I volunteered to lead the class across the bridge and to the bank area where we could take pictures. What I didn’t know, was that they had closed the bridge. It was scheduled to be demolished the next day. (I had crossed the bridge at lunch and it seemed fine.) So, I zoom up the ramp of the bridge with the whole camera class following closely behind me like a row of ducks in their individual cars. There was a guard standing on the bridge and he waved to me...friendly...I waved back at him. He looked a little shocked as we all passed him, but I didn’t really understand why until I got to the end of the bridge and the road had been bulldozed away. Uh-oh....too late to retreat...I just drove over the bank (very carefully) and down onto the side street and right down to the boat dock.

Everyone looked a little pale, but didn’t say much. My friends tell me that being around me is like being trapped in an I Love Lucy episode. My best efforts always turn into some crazy mishaps (adventures). It must be the red hair.

Here's a sneak peek into Jack and Kendra's life:

Kendra had barely finished locking the door to her apartment when Jack yanked her roughly into his arms.

“All damn day I’ve been thinking of you without panties. That was very naughty of you.”

“You make it sound like I’m a kid that needs to be spanked,” Kendra giggled, then her eyes grew wide at the look that crossed Jack’s face.

“Oh no, don’t you even think about it!” she warned.

Jack smirked, picking her up easily and flinging her across his shoulder in the traditional fireman’s carry. Kendra shrieked, beating ineffectually on his broad back until he dumped her unceremoniously on the bed where her skirt flipped up enough to remind him once again just how accessible she was.

Kendra started to scramble off the other side of the bed, her heart beating furiously in anticipation at the new playful side of Jack she was seeing. He lunged after her, pinning her face down on the mattress with his hard muscular body. “Where do you think you’re going?”

His voice was spoken in a challenging whisper against her ear and Kendra responded with a jolt of need that left her breathless. She felt his large hands gathering up her skirt, bunching it up over her hips while he lay partially over her back effectively holding her down against the bed despite her squirming.

He moved leisurely, his hands trailing up her legs as he felt the luxurious silk stockings against his fingers. Impatiently, he flipped the skirt out of his way, pushing it up around her waist so that her hips were exposed to him in nothing but her black garter belt. He ran his palm down her bare ass, to the lacy edge of her stockings. He hesitated at the lace, his fingers tracing the pattern, and then he decided to leave the hosiery in place. Backtracking, his hands felt the cool soft skin of her buttocks and he lingered for a moment, letting his fingers slide down the seam of her hips, teasing her, as he lightly parted her to his view.

Kendra whimpered into the mattress. She wanted him to take her. She arched her hips up into his hand, an open invitation, and he chuckled with satisfaction, that low male sound of pleasure filled with sex and sinfulness.
Unexpectedly his hand smacked her on the ass, causing a delicious burning to pinken the ivory skin. Kendra gasped with surprise and pushed into the mattress, away from the shocking, but not unpleasant, sting of his hand.
“Jack!” she gasped, still struggling to get out from under his dominant position.

Jack’s mouth found the back of her neck, while his hand remained resting on her hips. He dropped soft kisses, mingled with sharp little love bites that caused chills to chase down Kendra’s back. She shivered when he put his mouth back to her ear.

“I warned you paybacks are hell. It’s my turn now.”
